Pom poms, pie and peas, a silent disco a wedding in a swimming pool. This was no ordinary wedding.
Laura and Nathan are childhood sweethearts who have been together since school, so their day was always going to be a brilliant. I was delighted when then asked me to shoot their wedding in a swimming pool. Originally from Rochdale, work took Laura and Nathan to London before returning to Manchester a couple of years ago (so I think that confirms the north is better than the south then ;o) They’re the most relaxed couple a wedding photographer could possibly hope for and all they wanted was me to do was enjoy the day and shoot it as it happened. Dream clients!
Laura and Nathan were adamant that they didn’t want a stuffy, formal affair for their big day, so they chose the unique and spectacular Victoria Baths in Chorlton-on-Medlock for their wedding. Victoria Baths is a Grade II listed building which opened to the public in 1906. Manchester City Council closed the baths in 1993 and the building was left derelict. In September 2003, the Baths won the first series of the BBC’s Restoration programme. The building was chosen by a public phone-vote from a short-list of ten buildings in danger of dereliction in the UK. It was awarded £3.4 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the money raised through the phone-voting process. The Prince of Wales visited the baths a month later to help celebrate the win before a multi-million pound restoration project began in 2007 and it re-opened to the public in 2008.
From a wedding photographer’s point of view, Victoria Baths is a stunning venue. Part derelict, part refurbished, but all spectacular. I could have spent all day doing the couple shots alone. As it was, I kept it to my usual 20 minutes and I left Laura and Nathan to enjoy what I can only describe as one the happiest and fun weddings I’ve ever been to. The absolute highlight was the Silent Disco. It’s hard to explain how it works, but trust me, it does. 3 Channels, featuring 90’s dance, indie or pop, are on your headphones. No one else can hear what you hear and it brings out the ‘singing in the car’ mentality, where for some reason, everyone feels comfortable to get up and chuck out their best dancing moves. Great fun to take part in, even more hilarious to watch and listen to.
This was one of my favourite weddings of 2013 and will probably be one of my favourites for a long time.
I’ve since been back to shoot Emma and Tim’s Victoria Baths wedding photography.
So here’s Laura and Nathan’s wedding in a swimming pool. Music by Alex Winston, photos by me…
