Angel Inn Hetton Wedding Photography // Nic and Roo

You’d think that booking your wedding in the middle of August would be the safest bet to avoid bad weather wouldn’t you? Nic and Roo booked me to shoot their Angel Inn Hetton wedding photography in Skipton bang in the middle of August and honestly, it could have been October. The weather was grim. Cold, windy and very wet. The drive up through the Yorkshire Dales to the morning preparation was challenging (for that read death defying) as I’d have been better sailing than trying to drive. But I made it in one piece to Grassington and arrived to shoot Nic and her team of bridesmaids getting ready at The Grassington House Hotel. With Roo also in the same hotel, I managed to get some bonus groom prep along with the moment he received a very smart Omega watch from Nic!

Nic and Roo’s wedding was taking place at The Angel Inn in Hetton where the service is held in a wine cave. With low light and a lot of guests, it was a challenging service to shoot but once again, the Nikon’s nailed it! After a pretty awesome confetti shot I made my way to nearby Cracoe Village Hall for the reception. Nic, Roo and their friends and family had transformed the Village Hall into an amazing wedding reception. I also got to meet the amazingly talented John Brindle who was entertaining the guests on guitar throughout the day!

After the meal, the rain finally stopped and we got outside for 10 minutes of couple photos just as a dramatic sunset popped through the clouds.

So here’s Nic and Roo’s Angel Inn Hetton wedding photography. Music by Little Children, photos by me…

Newton Hall Wedding Photographer // Michelle and Matt

Newton Hall Wedding Photographer

This wedding was a little more personal than most. I’ve known Matt for over 15 years as we’ve played football together, hit the town, been gym buddies and we’ve travelled together (well, if lad’s holidays to Malia, Magaluf and Kavos count) so it was awesome to be asked to be his Newton Hall wedding photographer for his November wedding to Michelle.

It always adds a bit more pressure when photographing a friend’s wedding, you always want to do a great job but when it’s a mate I just add more pressure on myself to deliver.  On top of that, I pretty much knew all of the guests too, most of whom were seeing me in action for the first time since my career change. No pressure then!

I really wanted to nail this one as Matt is one of the nicest people you could ever meet.  No one, ever, has had a bad word to say about him. No one. Even when we played Sunday league football together in some of the dodgier parts of West Yorkshire, even the opposition players all seemed to like him (less so me). He’s that guy that everyone loves and in Michelle he’s found his perfect match. Michelle hails from Sunderland which explains why I was back as a Newton Hall wedding photographer for the second time in 2014 (the first being for Esther and Ben’s summer wedding). It’s a brilliant venue, stylish and modern with a team that are fantastic at what they do and I can now say the food is absolutely superb too, having stuffed my face during the wedding breakfast.

Michelle had really worked hard to style the wedding and you could tell, the venue looked amazing. The addition of the light up love letters supplied by Coco Luminaire looked amazing in the service room and really added something special to the service  and later on, the wedding breakfast and first dance. I’m a big fan of light up letters (although they did make me a little warmer than usual at the top of the aisle). On top of that, Michelle had styled the tables beautifully making the reception room easily the best one I’ve seen. Check out the images below and you’ll see exactly what I mean. I reckon Michelle should be a wedding stylist!

With rubbish weather sweeping in off the nearby North Sea, we were locked in to the venue, so almost every shot was done inside (we made a brave effort to head outside but that lasted about 2 minutes), so out came the off camera flash guns for the Vanity Fair shot of the bridal party, a cracking photo that always gets a lot of interest as I set it up. Not being biased (well, maybe I am a little bit), but I think this one is definitely the best one I’ve done this year!

Like all weddings, it was all over too quick, so here’s Michelle and Matt’s Newton Hall wedding photography. Music by Of Monsters and Men, photos by me….

2014 // The Best Bits…

So that was 2014. Another incredible year as a Manchester wedding photographer. I’ve shot 46 weddings, all different, all unique, all amazing. I’ve travelled over 7143 miles to Scotland, North Wales, Yorkshire, The Lake District, Northumberland, London and Ibiza. The Nikon’s have fired their way through 64438 photos. I’ve worked in castle’s, country houses, a working metal works, boutique hotels, a swimming pool, on a bowling alley, on the beach, country pubs, town halls, tipis and on Concorde. Every wedding has been different and I’ve been so lucky to have worked with relaxed, creative, and most importantly, fun couples throughout 2014. Without you guys I wouldn’t get to do what I love and I can’t thank you all enough for asking me to tag along on your day. It’s you guys who make me look good!

I’m already excited about 2015, I’ll be back at some of my favourite venues, taking in a bunch of new and exciting places all over the UK and there may even be a trip abroad for something very exciting

It’s been tough to choose the best bits of 2014, but after much deliberation, here’s a hand picked selection of my favourite wedding photos. I hope you like them too!

Elixir Ibiza Wedding Photography // Vicky and Matt

Elixir Ibiza Wedding Photography

Sometimes I can’t believe how lucky I am in my job. Being booked to shoot Vicky and Matt’s Elixir Ibiza wedding photography was definitely one of those moments. I’d met Vicky and Matt when I shot Debbie and Karl’s wedding at The Saddleworth Hotel in 2013. At the time Vicky was thinking of heading off abroad for a destination wedding and she asked if I traveled (which I emphatically said yes to!) A few months later Vicky and Matt had found their dream venue and had set their hearts on Ibiza and Elixir Shore Club. So I booked a Jet2 flight and in the middle of August flew out to the White aisle for my first ever Elixir Ibiza wedding photography job!

Wedding in Ibiza

Vicky was getting ready in Cala Llonga so I met her there for the bridal prep before sharing her taxi over to Cala Codolar to Elixir Shore Club. What a venue. A shabby chic paradise, set high on the cliffs over a small beach, Elixir is something else. Vicky was walked down the aisle by her brother before Matt and Vicky shared their wedding blessing in front of the stunning views of the sea. With glorious sun shining down it was one of the those moments where I had to remember I was actually working. A totally amazing service finished and the open bar started (so I knew it was going to be an amazing wedding). Although it did get a little hot (even the staff said it was a little warmer than usual, peaking at just over 40 degrees), everyone soaked up the sun and prosecco before I took the wedding party down to the beach for the group shots. Vicky and Matt didn’t want anything boring or stuffy, so we set the lads up to look cool and the girls to have fun. I LOVE the group shots, easily some of my favourite I’ve taken.

Ibiza Sunset

I was then invited to eat with the wedding party and I can hand on heart say this was the best wedding food I’ve ever eaten. A barbecue to beat all barbecue’s. It’s worth having your wedding at Elixir Shore Club for the food alone it’s that good. Then, as the sun started to set I grabbed Vicky and Matt and we went back down to the beach to get the classic Ibiza sunset in the couple shots. It was a spectacular experience and I think the shots do the sunset justice, before we headed back to the speeches and a huge party (which I get thoroughly involved with when the Nikon’s were packed away!)

Without doubt, the coolest wedding of the year and one of the highlights of my wedding photography career. Ibiza is a brilliant venue for your wedding blessing and Elixir is one of the best venues I’ve ever worked at. A stunning venue with amazing views and it’s run brilliantly by the team there. I cannot recommend it highly enough and if you are planning on heading out there, I’m more than up for a some more Elixir Ibiza wedding photography.

Portmeirion Wedding Photographer // Suzie and Andrew

Portmeirion Wedding Photographer

If ever I wanted a sunny Saturday it was when I was Suzie and Andrew’s Portmeirion wedding photographer in May. But their wedding was on a bank holiday weekend and we all know that there’s very rarely sun on a bank holiday weekend. Suzie and Andrew live down south in Windsor and they wanted something totally unique for their wedding. It’s safe to say Portmeirion is totally unique. If you’ve never seen or heard of it, Portmeirion is a popular tourist village in Gwynedd, North Wales. It was designed and built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975 in the style of an Italian village. It’s been featured in the 1960’s Spy drama The Prisoner and more recently was the location for Supergrass’ single ‘Alright’ (click here to watch the video). It’s super quirky venue for a wedding.

The journey down was a little stressful, having finished my wedding in Manchester city centre at 9.30pm the night before I set off on the 2 and a half hour trip down the A55 to find out that it was shut, due to flooding. Driving around the winding back roads of North Wales at midnight was more than a little stressful! But I made it to my hotel in one piece and I was with Suzie at 8.30am for the bridal preparation at The Portmeirion Hotel. The wedding was at a nearby church before we returned to Portmeirion for the reception. Spotting a break in the rain I grabbed Suzie and Andrew and we got the couple photos in the bag, just in time. The heavens opened which meant we had to improvise on the group photos. The hotel had a fantastic reception lobby, like something you’d see in a high society magazine. and his got me thinking, why not do a high society photo-shoot like a cover of Vanity Fair. So I set up some off camera flash, re-arranged the furniture and got the wedding party to pose as though they were Hollywood’s elite. I must admit, I was a little nervous how this image would be received as it is a huge departure from my normal style, so I stuck the photo on my Facebook page. People seemed to like it and I’ve got a few requests to do it again at weddings later this year.

To round off the day, the first dance was a caileigh, a first for me. Totally different to a traditional first dance and good practice for me as I’ve a couple more of these later this year! Everyone involved had a great time and it was the perfect end to a brilliant wedding. So here’s Suzie and Andrew’s day, photos by me, music by Imagine Dragons…
