Merewood Country House Wedding

August 2017 was the busiest month of weddings I have ever had with twelve weddings, starting with Becky and Colin’s Merewood Country House Wedding. I love shooting at Merewood Country House Hotel, set back from Lake Windermere, it is a stunning location in the Lake District and one of the friendliest venues I have the pleasure of working at. The staff are absolutely terrific and I always receive a warm welcome at Merewood. Two years had passed since I shot Julia and Alex’s wedding at Merewood Country House Hotel, so it was nice to return to one of my favourite venues. Becky and Colin had their wedding on Tuesday the 1st of August as it both of their parents wedding anniversaries on the same date, so the 1st of August is a very special date for all of the family. Just to add, Becky is a photography teacher, so she really knows her stuff when it comes to all things camera related. No pressure then!

Views of Lake Windermere

I arrived in good time for the morning preparations and it was a very relaxed affair with Becky and her bridesmaids getting ready in the bridal suite (which has a stunning view of Lake Windermere). Colin and the boys were also in Merewood so I switched between the ladies and gents throughout the preparation. Colin looked a little nervous as her waited for Becky to arrive at the top of the aisle, but it was all smiles as Becky and Colin exchanged their vows, bathed in the beautiful light of the ceremony room at Merewood Country House Hotel. Confetti and hugs greeted Becky and Colin as everyone enjoyed canapes and champagne in the gardens of Merewood during the afternoon reception.

Heartfelt Speeches

Becky and Colin headed down to Merewood’s sister venue, Cragwood Country House Hotel (where I am shooting a wedding later this year) for a short session of couple photos. We made the most of the spectacular views over Lake Windermere. We are so lucky to have such stunning scenery in the Lake District, shooting wedding photography there is an absolute pleasure. The speeches followed the wedding breakfast and Becky’s father, Colin and his brother and best man all had the room in the palm’s of their hands with brilliant, funny and heartfelt speeches. With a short gap between the speeches and first dance, We nipped down to the jetty at Low Wood Bay for a few more photos before the cake cut and first dance kicked off the evening reception, which was expertly DJ’d by Gary Mills.

Luckily for me Becky’s sister and bridesmaid, Natalie has booked me to shoot her wedding to Antonee in April, so I’ll get to see Becky and Colin again soon! It was an absolute pleasure to be shoot their Merewood Country House wedding photography and a huge thank you to all the staff at Merewood Country House Hotel for their warm welcome, cups of tea and fabulous three course meal! It really is a wonderful wedding venue and one of my very favourite places to work at. So here’s Becky and Colin’s Merewood Country House Hotel wedding photography. Belle Epoque Wedding Photography // Hayley and Tim

Wedding at The Belle Epoque

Nearly three years passed between the first time I shot a wedding at The Belle Epoque and the next wedding I photographed. In March 2016 I shot Steph and Gary’s intimate wedding then, like buses, two more came along in a week. I shot Hayley and Tim’s Belle Epoque wedding photography in June a week before my third 2016 Belle Epoque wedding a week later. However, I was very much looking forward to returning to one of the most unique wedding venues in Cheshire. The Belle Epoque is a terrific venue for a wedding, intimate and dark, it has its own unique look and feel. It’s also a superb restaurant and haunt of many a celebrity, so it’s easy to see why Hayley and Tim booked their wedding at the Belle Epoque.

Hayley got ready at her house before making her way to The Belle Epoque where Tim was patiently waiting at the top of the aisle. As you’ll see from the photos below, Belle Epoque wedding photography is pretty challenging. The Nikon’s coped admirably though and as soon as Hayley and Tim had said their ‘I do’s’ it was out into the gardens for the wedding reception.

Tom Seals

The guests were entertained by the superb Tom Seals whilst enjoying champagne in the Belle Epoque grounds. Tom Seals is one of the leading jazz pianists in the country and he is astonishingly talented. Performing alongside Tom was Sam Healey on Sax. Sam also perform with leading Manchester wedding band The Rush (who I am working with quite a few times this year) and the combination of the Tom and Sam was amazing. If you’re looking for musicians for your wedding day they check out Tom Seals. Easily one of the most talented musicians I have ever seen perform.

After the reception in the gardens and the wedding breakfast the guests enjoyed the speeches before Hayley and Tim made the most of the low sun over Knutsford as we made our way out for some natural couple photos. Before I knew it, it was time for the first dance at Hayley and Tim’s Belle Epoque wedding. However, it wouldn’t be long before I would be back for some more Belle Epoque wedding photography as I returned a week later to shoot Julia and Jo’s wedding (which is coming to the blog soon!)

So here’s Hayley and Tim’s Belle Epoque wedding photography. Music by COLLEAGUES, photos by me…

Rivington Hall Barn Wedding Photographer // Laura and Rich

Rivington Hall Barn Wedding Photographer

Wedding Photography at Rivington Hall Barn

I was looking forward to shooting Laura and Rich’s wedding as a Rivington Hall Barn wedding photographer as it meant a return to a venue I really enjoyed working at back in 2014 when I shot Leanne and Mark’s wedding. I really enjoy wedding photography at Rivington Hall Barn but the weather could not have been more different from my first visit though as it was a cold, wet and windy February day for Laura and Rich (in comparison to a lovely warm August day in 2014). However, that’s usually what winter weddings in the UK are like, and to be fair, quite a lot of summer weddings suffer the same fate and I’m more than used to battling less than favorable conditions. Bridal preparation was at Laura’s parents home where the morning started with Laura cracking open a couple of bottles of champagne and enjoying a relaxed morning of pampering whilst I quietly snapped away (in between grabbing more than a couple of handfuls of Haribo’s that were on the kitchen side). It was a lovely moment when Laura walked in the room and her family saw Laura in her dress for the first time (especially her very proud dad!)

The marriage service was nearby at Rivington Church where I caught up with Rich as he sneaked a quick chaser from his hip flask before Laura arrived under an umbrella. Rivington Church is quite compact but I was allowed full access at the top of the church to shoot the wedding service and it was great being so close to the action which meant I missed none of the jokes, laughs and perhaps the occasional tear during Laura and Rich’s marriage service. A quick confetti shot took place before we drove (literally) around the corner to Rivington Hall Barn. I love being a Rivington Hall Barn wedding photographer. It’s a huge barn (the clue is in the name) with exposed beams and a fantastic team who run the day flawlessly. The Highgate String Quartet were entertaining the guests (as they had at the church) with the highlight being their performance of the Game of Thrones theme tune, which was brilliant (but a little scary if you’ve ever watched the show!)

Natural, Relaxed, Couple Photos

With the rain insisting on joining the wedding for the full day, Laura decided she wanted to brave the weather for the couple photos so we went outside to grab a very quick session of couple photos in less than glamorous conditions. However, Laura and Rich made the absolute most of their time together and we got some lovely natural, realxed, couple photos outside Rivington Hall, even if it Laura’s feet got a little soggier than we’d have liked! The speeches were brilliant, with Rich’s best man absolutely tearing him apart. I absolutely love the shot of Rich with his head in his hands as his best man delivered yet another story that had the wedding guests (and myself) in stitches.

Once it had turned dark the rain decided to back off, so Laura and Rich came outside for a few more photos with some off camera flash before we headed back inside for the cake cutting and first dance. With The Deadbeats Party Band on duty, the evening reception kicked off with Laura and Rich’s first dance with the dance floor quickly filling up as the Deadbeats really go the reception going as my day as a Rivington Barn wedding photographer came to an end. It was a brilliant day with a super relaxed couple who were great company to be around and I can’t wait to return to Rivington Hall Barn!

Bells of Peover Wedding Photographer // Lucie and Chris

Bells of Peover Wedding Photographer

I like Cheshire weddings (who doesn’t?) so it worked out nicely for me to be back there only a couple of weeks after my last visit to Peover (for Kate and Roger’s Colshaw Hall Wedding) as Lucie and Chris had booked me to be their Bells of Peover wedding photographer. The day started at Lucie’s dad’s house in Stockport with a warm welcome and a brew (always a winner) and as a bonus, there was gorgeous summer sun too. It was only a short walk (or drive if you’re lazy like me) to Our Lady and St.Christophers Church for the wedding service where I met up with Chris, who was looking ever so slightly nervous at the top of the aisle. Lucie was bang on time and Chris soon got to see Lucie as she was led up the aisle by her very proud dad. After an emotional service there were plenty of smiles (and waves) as Lucie and Chris wallked through the confetti as they left church.

After the wedding Lucie was taken to The Bells of Peover in Chris’ other love, his blue Suburu Impreza. It’s safe to say Lucie is not sad to have seen the back of the car (Chris has sold it on to a friend now) but it made a re-appearance for the wedding with Chris gleefully behind the wheel. I arrived just before Lucie and Chris at The Bells of Peover (yep, I beat his Suburu in my family estate car) and as the guests arrived we made the most of the time and grabbed the couple photos. As soon as we had done 20 minutes almost all the guests had arrived and the reception kicked off in the gardens of The Bells of Peover in front of the tipi where the rest of the reception would be held.

Despite the attention of one or two summer wasps, the guests had a fantastic time on a warm summers afternoon before heading into the tipi for the brilliant speeches and meal. With a night of live funk and soul music courtesy of Natural Soul, the party kicked off in the tipi with some of my favourite first dance shots of this year.

Barca Manchester Wedding Photography // Lorna and Dave

Barca Manchester Wedding Photography

Lorna and Dave were heading back to Lorna’s hometown of Manchester for their Barca Manchester Wedding Photography. Their wedding was at my favourite city centre venue, Manchester Town Hall (where I had been only a couple of months earlier for Emma and David). I love the Town Hall for many reasons, the awesome architecture, the dramatic lighting, the endless photo opportunities and the brilliant registrars. If you are looking for a city centre wedding venue then look no further than Manchester Town Hall.

Following the service (and a handful of couple photos in the Town Hall) we all made our way to Barca in Castlefield. Barca used to be owned by Mick Hucknall and back in the 90’s (when I first started venturing into the city) was the bar to be seen at in Manchester. In fact I’d rubbed shoulders with the entire Manchester United first team on one occasion when I had managed to blag my way in back in the late 90’s! The reception was held on the first floor terrace overlooking Catalan Square and the canals and with glorious sunshine it was the perfect way to spend an afternoon for the guests and my first time taking some Barca Manchester wedding photography

With the Castlefield Festival taking place on the same day access into Castlefield was limited for the couple photos, I had to beg one of the stewards to let Lorna and Dave onto the metal footbridge for one couple photo which was heavily inspired by an image taken there by the superb David Stubbs in the same location. It was the only image we were allowed to do in and around the canal which was a shame but I managed to find a cool new battered wall to shoot Lorna and Dave in front of, much to the surprise of a passing police officer who seemed baffled as to why I was photographing in front of a battered wall.

With warm summers afternoon and plenty of cool drinks on the go I didn’t keep Lorna and Dave for long and soon had them back at Barca for the first dance and evening reception.

Plough Inn Hathersage Wedding Photography // Laura + Chris

Marquee Wedding

There’s something special about a wedding in a marquee. I can’t put my finger on it, but whenever I photograph a wedding in a marquee it’s always a brilliant day. Laura and Chris booked me to shoot their Plough Inn Hathersage wedding photography in The Peak District where Laura was born and raised, which meant that we weren’t struggling for some spectacular scenery. I made my way down the Snake Pass to Laura’s parents near Sheffield for the bridal preparation where I met up with a very excited bunch of ladies who were having their make up expertly applied by Rosie Powers. As the Moet flowed (quite early on too) it was obvious this was going to be a lively wedding!

Plough Inn Hathersage Wedding Photography

Once the ladies were suitably beautified and ready I went over to meet Chris at St James’ Church in Sheffield, who was much calmer than most of my grooms awaiting the arrival of his wife to be. Laura soon arrived in her vintage camper van and it wasn’t long before Laura and Chris were being showered in confetti before we set off for their reception at The Plough Inn in Hathersage. Laura and Chris wanted the Peak District to feature in their couple photographs, so we stopped on the way to Hathersage and grabbed some quick couple photos, including the one at the top of the page, which I absolutely love with Laura and Chris absolutely nailing wedding cool!

Tom Rocks and The Replicants

We arrived at The Plough Inn and grabbed a few photos with the camper vans before Laura and Chris enjoyed the afternoon with their guests whilst they were entertained by Lauren Moreau playing the harp. The marquee looked amazing, styled by Laura it looked beautiful and I loved the vintage ladder table plan. The speeches were hilarious and emotional in equal measure before my favourite wedding band, Tom Rocks and The Replicants, arrived. I knew it was going to go off when I over heard the reaction of the guests to the sound check (everyone was super impressed) and I wasn’t wrong. In fact, this was the craziest dance floor I’ve been on for a long time as even I got lifted up onto the ushers shoulders after the first dance! I wasn’t the only one as Tom from the band was hoisted up onto the groomsmen during Mr Brightside as the wedding party went off big time. Honestly, I say this a lot, you’ve got to book Tom Rocks and The Replicants for your wedding, they absolutely kill it every time and make your evening reception the best party you can possibly imagine!

Hyde Bank Farm Wedding Photography // Stacey and Mike

HYDE BANK FARM WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

Stacey and Mike’s Hyde Bank Farm wedding photography

I love working at new venues and I loved Stacey and Mike’s wedding because I got to shoot my first ever Hyde Bank Farm wedding photography. Some photographers will tell you that you should only book someone who has worked at a venue before (usually because they’ve worked there themselves). This, of course, is nonsense. I mean, they must have worked there for the first time once themselves. I love new venues, new things to see and most importantly new opportunities for photographs. I mean, who wants their wedding photographs to look the same as every other wedding at their venue? It also means I occasionally find a little gem of a venue and Hyde Bank Farm is most certainly that.

Stacey and Mike got married at their local church before we made our way to Hyde Bank Farm. You think you’re going the wrong way as you make your way through an industrial estate into what appears to be the middle of nowhere before Hyde Bank Farm pops up. It’s a small family run farm, licensed for weddings (should you want to do your whole day there) and it’s brilliant for photographers. From the exposed brickwork and beams in the service/reception room to the landscaped gardens it’s a cracking place to shoot a wedding. But best of all are the working farm barns where you can get some really unique couple shots, and that’s just what we did. With the sun making a late appearance, we delayed the couple photos until after the wedding breakfast and headed out to make the most of the amazing low sunlight. I always approach weddings flexibly to make sure we don’t miss the best opportunities for the couple photos and I think we certainly made the most of the sun during Stacey and Mike’s Hyde Bank wedding photography.

With the first dance shortly after the couple photos, my day as shooting my first Hyde Bank Farm wedding photography came to a close, but I’m very much looking forward to coming back soon!

Newton Hall Wedding Photographer // Michelle and Matt

Newton Hall Wedding Photographer

This wedding was a little more personal than most. I’ve known Matt for over 15 years as we’ve played football together, hit the town, been gym buddies and we’ve travelled together (well, if lad’s holidays to Malia, Magaluf and Kavos count) so it was awesome to be asked to be his Newton Hall wedding photographer for his November wedding to Michelle.

It always adds a bit more pressure when photographing a friend’s wedding, you always want to do a great job but when it’s a mate I just add more pressure on myself to deliver.  On top of that, I pretty much knew all of the guests too, most of whom were seeing me in action for the first time since my career change. No pressure then!

I really wanted to nail this one as Matt is one of the nicest people you could ever meet.  No one, ever, has had a bad word to say about him. No one. Even when we played Sunday league football together in some of the dodgier parts of West Yorkshire, even the opposition players all seemed to like him (less so me). He’s that guy that everyone loves and in Michelle he’s found his perfect match. Michelle hails from Sunderland which explains why I was back as a Newton Hall wedding photographer for the second time in 2014 (the first being for Esther and Ben’s summer wedding). It’s a brilliant venue, stylish and modern with a team that are fantastic at what they do and I can now say the food is absolutely superb too, having stuffed my face during the wedding breakfast.

Michelle had really worked hard to style the wedding and you could tell, the venue looked amazing. The addition of the light up love letters supplied by Coco Luminaire looked amazing in the service room and really added something special to the service  and later on, the wedding breakfast and first dance. I’m a big fan of light up letters (although they did make me a little warmer than usual at the top of the aisle). On top of that, Michelle had styled the tables beautifully making the reception room easily the best one I’ve seen. Check out the images below and you’ll see exactly what I mean. I reckon Michelle should be a wedding stylist!

With rubbish weather sweeping in off the nearby North Sea, we were locked in to the venue, so almost every shot was done inside (we made a brave effort to head outside but that lasted about 2 minutes), so out came the off camera flash guns for the Vanity Fair shot of the bridal party, a cracking photo that always gets a lot of interest as I set it up. Not being biased (well, maybe I am a little bit), but I think this one is definitely the best one I’ve done this year!

Like all weddings, it was all over too quick, so here’s Michelle and Matt’s Newton Hall wedding photography. Music by Of Monsters and Men, photos by me….

Low Wood Bay Wedding Photography // Laura and Rob

Low Wood Bay Wedding Photography

I had a bit of a travel challenge for Laura and Rob’s Low Wood Bay wedding photography. Their wedding was on a Thursday on Windermere in the Lake District and on the day after, I was a guest/photographer at my friends Matt and Michelle’s wedding at Newton Hall in Northumberland, which is over 170 miles away from Windermere. It’s a good thing I don’t mind driving then.

Low Wood Bay is set on Windermere, about a mile away from one of my favourite places in the Lakes, Ambleside. When Baby T arrives later this month our foreign holidays are likely to turn into many more weekends in Ambleside so I was really looking forward to Laura and Rob’s day. It’s a stunning part of the UK to visit and shoot a wedding and I’m lucky in that I have a number of 2015 weddings booked in and around the lakes. Laura and Rob’s day was all at one venue so it was nice and relaxing knowing I could cover the bridal and groom preparation before their wedding service. With a 1.30pm service and the wedding breakfast at 3pm I had to move a little quicker than normal the couple shots on the jetty outside the hotel before a handful of formal family shots.  With amazing views if Windermere in the background I’m pretty pleased with the couple shots, I certainly think we made the most of the location!

Unfortunately we missed out on one of the most spectacular sunsets I’ve ever seen in the UK. During the wedding breakfast the sun made it through the low cloud and delivered the type of sunset I could only dream of. I very nearly dragged Laura and Rob from their main course but I opted to head out and grab a few landscape shots instead. The guests were then entertained with a casino before the night reception and the first dance and I bid fairwell to Laura and Rob and along with Mrs T, we set off on our cross country road trip to Northumberland whilst Laura and Rob partied long into the night!

The Pheasant Hotel Wedding Photography // Sarah and Andy

Sarah and Andy’s Pheasant Hotel wedding photography

Sarah and Andy’s wedding was an intimate affair at a fantastic venue,  The Pheasant Hotel in Harome, North Yorkshire. A new venue for me (which I love), Harome is a tiny village quite some way off the beaten track but it’s a beautiful spot to have a wedding and The Pheasant Hotel is a great venue, overlooking a duck pond, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in an Enid Blyton book! Originally a blacksmiths shop and stables, the Pheasant Hotel is now a busy bar, hotel and wedding venue.

The hotel has it’s challenges, with a dark bar testing my no flash rule to the limit for the documentary photos, but the cute service room and picture book setting gave us plenty of options for the couple photos. Talking about the couple photos, the sun couldn’t have timed it’s arrival better as we walked out to the duck pond it appeared behind the trees, making the couple photos even more dramatic than I could have hoped for!

This was an unusual wedding for me as I was only covering the day for a few hours, but I managed to grab the end of the bridal prep all the way through to the cake cutting, so only the first dance missed out on me and my Nikon’s. With the prep, service and reception at The Pheasant Hotel I had to go into full on stealth mode to blend into the background as the hotel isn’t huge and this was a family only wedding. It’s easy to stand out in these circumstances and spoil the documentary style I pride myself on, but I think I managed to stay in the background enough that people forgot I was there, even though I was carrying two huge cameras around with me! So here’s Sarah and Andy’s day…
