2017

2017

Crikey! It’s already December and the time of year that all wedding photographers start to share their ‘best of’ wedding photos. I’ve not finished shooting weddings this year, with one left between Christmas and New Year at Eaves Hall, but as we run up to Christmas I’ve decided that rather than a ‘best of’, I’d just share one photo from each wedding I have shot this year. No reason behind each one other than it’s a shot I like. As always, I am drawn to the natural, real moments of a wedding, with the majority of the photos I have chosen being true documentary shots. But there are a few posed couple photos in there too. I enjoy this part of the wedding day and it’s nice to share a proper mix of the photos I take on a wedding day.

A Brilliant Year

It’s been another brilliant year. For the third year in a row I have shot 49 weddings, travelled the country, taken in new venues and headed back to some of my old favourites, shot in every type of weather imaginable and I’ve drunk more cups of Yorkshire Tea than I think is probably safe for human consumption. I started the year shooting Nikon and ended 2017 shooting mainly on a new Sony A9 (which is amazing). Colshaw Hall and Eaves Hall went toe to toe for my most popular venue with Eaves Hall edging it 7 weddings to 6 (however, I love both venues equally!)

The Best Wedding Suppliers

I again had the absolute pleasure of working alongside some of the very best wedding suppliers in the country, from make up artists, florists, event teams and videographers to the best live music acts in the business, it’s been an absolute pleasure to see the incredible talent in the wedding industry in action every week. I can’t wait to see you all again in 2018. I was also delighted to be a finalist in The Wedding Industry Awards 2018 where I was in the company of some of the best wedding photographers in the world. The North West really is a hot-bed of supreme wedding photography talent. It’s fantastic that I can now call many of these photographers good friends and it’s brilliant to be in an industry where my ‘rivals’ are so generous with their time and experience. Thank you all for your critique, advice and help (and for a good game of footy every now and again!)

Thank You

On a personal level, 2017 was a bit of a significant one. I turned the big four-zero (I know, I don’t look a day over 21 ;o), we bought our big grown up house in the sticks and most importantly of all, we added Jaime Sofia to our little family in October, meaning I am now well outnumbered 3-1 by the ladies in our household.

I say every year, I wouldn’t get to do such an amazing job without my brilliant couples. I am so happy you chose me to shoot your wedding day and I’m equally delighted with the lovely feedback you’ve given me this year. So as always, a huge thank you goes out to you guys. 2018 is shaping up to be another brilliant year and there are plans afoot to add something new and very exciting into my work, more to be revealed in 2018!

So here the images are, in the order I took them, from January to December. As always, let me know what you think in the comments below…

Outdoor Wedding At The Saddleworth Hotel // Sammy and Rob

outdoor wedding at The Saddleworth Hotel

Outdoor Wedding Service

Sammy and Rob took advantage of a rare sunny day in Saddleworth to have their outdoor wedding service at The Saddleworth Hotel. It was the first time I’ve photographed a wedding where the weather had been on board at The Saddleworth Hotel. I’ve shot plenty of weddings at The Saddleworth Hotel and most had originally planned for outdoor wedding service. Claire and Neal’s wedding was one that ended up inside thanks to the legendary weather in Saddleworth. However, Sammy and Rob had a lovely, clear spring day for their outdoor wedding in the stunning gardens at The Saddleworth Hotel. I really enjoy shooting weddings at The Saddleworth Hotel, it’s one of my favourite venues and it has so many stunning locations for beautiful wedding photos.

Wedding Photos in The Woods

As teh wind picked up after their wedding, Sammy and Rob were had their reception inside The Saddleworth Hotel. The light inside The Saddleworth Hotel helps creates some lovely documentary wedding images as I worked my way around the guests enjoying the canapes and drinks. For the couple photos we headed out into the woods at the back of The Saddleworth Hotel. This is a favourite area for me to shoot couple photos, it’s a dramatic setting and at times it looks like Sammy and Rob are in a Canadian forest. It’s a great area for stunning wedding photos. Sammy and Rob enjoyed a beautiful wedding breakfast (which I can vouch for as I was kindly fed three courses by the fantastic team at The Saddleworth Hotel) before their brilliant speeches and their first dance.

I always enjoy shooting weddings at The Saddleworth Hotel and I am looking forward to returning in 2018. So here’s Sammy and Rob’s outdoor wedding at The Saddleworth Hotel, let me know what you think in the comments below…

King Street Townhouse Wedding Photography

Jen and Kieron’s wedding gave me the chance to shoot my first King Street Townhouse wedding photography. King Street Townhouse is a stunning boutique hotel in the heart of the city centre and a fabulous venue for a wedding. Part of the Eclectic Hotels group (which also features Didsbury House Hotel, Eleven Didsbury Park and Great John Street Hotel), King Street Townhouse is a fantastic addition to the city centre. Set on the 6th floor, the reception room has stunning views over the city and Manchester Town Hall. As with all of Eclectic Hotel’s venues, the staff are fantastic and having samples the food during Jen and Kieron’s wedding, I can heartily recommend King Street Townhouse for your wedding.

Amazing Views

Jen got ready at her parents house before heading, literally, around the corner to her local church. Once the service was over Jen and Kieron were showered in confetti before jumping into her fathers hand built wedding car which took them into the city centre. Arriving at King Street Townhouse the guests enjoyed drinks and canapes on the terrace with the amazing views over the city and the Town Hall and Beetham Tower. After the wedding breakfast the speeches were terrific and heartfelt with laughter and tears in equal measure.

City Centre Wedding Photos

Once the speeches were complete Jen and Kieron ventured out into the city for their city centre wedding photos. Starting on King Street itself before heading into the alleyways and ending up in front of Manchester Town Hall. The locals displayed their wit and warmth as Kieron and Jen wandered the streets and I captured some lovely images of them within Manchester city centre. As we returned to King Street Townhouse, the staff had done a remarkable of job or getting the room ready for the evening reception and Jen and Kieron kicked off the night’s celebration with their first dance.

I really enjoyed my first King Street Townhouse wedding and I’m looking forward to returning in a few weeks! So here’s Jen and Kieron’s day…

Spring Wedding at The White Hart Lydgate // Rhea and Luke

Spring Wedding at The White Hart Lydgate

Spring Wedding in Saddleworth

Luke and Rhea had their Spring wedding at The White Hart in Lydgate, Saddleworth. It’s a venue I know well as I only live a mile away from The White Hart. I love shooting weddings at The White Hart Lydgate (like Katy and Jon’s wedding), the venue is famous for it’s outstanding food and beautiful location in the Saddleworth Hills.

Personal Wedding Planning

Rhea and Luke got engaged at Alderley Edge back in 2015 and they wanted to make sure their wedding was as personal as possible. They made sure that their family and friends helped in any way they could. Luke’s auntie made the bridesmaid dresses as his mum Angela made the wedding cake. All the musical  entertainment was provided by friends and family and Luke and Rhea even flew in Father Eamon Graham from Ireland to marry them in Luke’s parents church in Didsbury.

Creative Couple Photos

Photography was a really important decision for Rhea and Luke as both have a keen interest in photography themselves. Rhea and Luke were keen to avoid the standard wedding photography and wanted natural images throughout their day with a handful of creative couple photos. In Rhea and Luke’s own words, “We appreciate the level of skill and difficulty it takes to create sensational wedding photos.”  They are my ideal clients and left me to get on with shooting their day as I saw it. Helpfully, even through it was a Spring wedding at The White Hart Lydgate, we had a beautiful sunny day as we headed into nearby Grasscroft for Rhea and Luke’s couple photos.

The White Hart at Lydgate

Having fallen in love with The White Hart at Lydgate after visiting for a wedding fair there Luke and Rhea booked the venue for their wedding, with the amazing food and stunning views sealing their decision. The White Hart did not disappoint as the staff ran the day beautifully. It’s always a pleasure to work at a wedding venue that is well organised. The White Hart were brilliant and Luke and Rhea loved every minute of their spring wedding at The White Hart Lydgate.

I’ll leave the final words of advice to Rhea and Luke “Just enjoy the whole planning and wedding process and don’t get caught up on the little things. Remember, most of all it’s about the two of you, Oh and book James Tracey!!”

Best of 2016 // James Tracey Photography

best of 2016

Best of 2016

It only seems two minutes since I was compiling my Best of 2015. As I went through every wedding I have shot this year to pick my Best of 2016, I couldn’t believe how quickly the year has gone by. I’ve had the pleasure of shooting 49 weddings again this year at venues all over the U.K. and as far as Ibiza. I’ve been back to some familiar venues and taken in some new venues and I have loved every minute of it.

Fantastic Wedding Suppliers

I’ve also been lucky enough to have worked alongside some of the best wedding professionals in the industry. It’s been an absolute pleasure to be involved with talented, hard working and inspirational people every week. There are so many fantastic suppliers I have worked with I can’t possibly name them all (for fear of missing some of them out) but you all know who you are and I am delighted to be working with you all again in 2017.

Thank You

However, I have the best job because I have the best couples. I’m not just saying this either, each and every couple featured below (and there is at least one shot from every wedding I shot this year) have been fantastic to work with. You’ve all trusted me to shoot your wedding day and then left me to do it the way I want. I have the most laid back, relaxed couples and I love working with such wonderful people. So once again I have to say a massive thank you to each and every one of my couples, thank you for trusting me to shoot your wedding day.

So here’s my Best of 2016. Every wedding is featured so let me know in the comments below what you think.

Gorton Monastery Wedding Photography // Lauren and Adam

Wedding At Gorton Monastery

As a Manchester wedding photographer I love working at the amazing venues all over the city. When Lauren and Adam asked me to shoot their Gorton Monastery wedding photography I could not wait. It was my first time shooting at one of Manchester’s most unique venues. In 1997 Manchester Monastery was put on the Worlds Monuments Fund Watch List of the 100 Most Endangered Sites, alongside Macchu Picchu, Pompeii and The Taj Mahal. The Monastery was restored and re-opened to the public in 2007, so now you can now have your wedding at Gorton Monastery.

Typical Manchester Weather

Lauren got ready at home in Manchester city centre and from there I made my way to Gorton Monastery for the wedding service. Gorton Monastery wedding photography is fantastic, the venue is stunning and every angle of the building looks amazing on camera. Lauren and Adam got married within the amazing surroundings of The Monastery and it was a wonderful marriage service. With typical Manchester weather outside the confetti was thrown in the marquee before the wedding guests enjoyed canapes and drinks.

Top Table

The fantastic team from Top Table were on hand so the wedding food was superb. I worked with the Top Table team at Erin and Andy’s Sandhole Oak Barn wedding and their food really is top class. Once the meal and speeches were complete, Lauren and Adam braved the less than perfect weather for their couple photos outside Gorton Monastery. With the photos in the bag it was back inside Gorton Monastery. The brilliant Jukebox Band were on hand to get the first dance and evening reception going. Having seen Jukebox Band is action in June at Julia and Jo’s wedding at The Belle Epoque, I knew Lauren and Adam’s reception was going to be a great night.

So here’s Lauren and Adam’s Gorton Monastery wedding photography. Music by Of Monsters and Men, photos by me…

Great John Street Hotel Wedding Photography // Kirstie and Michelle

Great John Street Hotel Wedding Photography

I’d been waiting a while to shoot my first Great John Street Hotel wedding photography so I was delighted when Kirstie and Michelle booked me to shoot their wedding day.  Great John Street Hotel is part of the Eclectic Collection chain of hotels in Manchester including Didsbury House Hotel, Eleven Didsbury Park and the new King Street Townhouse. I have been lucky enough to have shot a couple of weddings at their hotels (Vicky and Stefano’s wedding at Didsbury House Hotel and Richard and Kenny’s wedding at Eleven Didsbury Park) and I was very excited to finally shoot my first day of wedding photography at Great John Street Hotel. I arrived  to shoot both Kirstie and Michelle’s preparation at Great John Street Hotel. As they are both hairdressers it came as no surprise to see them doing their friends hair when I arrived. I jumped between their rooms to capture the preparation before heading upstairs for their Great John Street Hotel wedding photography.

Roof Terrace Reception

Kirstie and Michelle had an intimate and personal marriage service at the top of Great John Street Hotel. Once married they made their way out onto the roof terrace for their reception drinks. With stunning low summer sun over Manchester, it was the perfect evening for an outdoor reception and Kirstie and Michelle friends and family had an amazing time in the wonderful summer weather. I took Kirstie and Michelle for a short twenty minute walk in and around the streets near to Great John Street Hotel for their couple photos before we returned for the BBQ and wedding speeches. With the sun setting over Manchester, Kirstie and Michelle had their first dance as wife and wife and kicked off the party celebration with a DJ who had flown in from Ibiza just for their wedding! So here’s Kirstie and Michelle’s Great John Street Hotel wedding photography. Music by Stardust, photos by me…

Oldham Wedding Photography // Claire and Neil

Wedding Photography in Oldham

After the wonderful weather at Cat and Andy’s wedding at West Tower, Claire and Neal were not quite as lucky when they had their Oldham wedding photography at The Saddleworth Hotel. The weather was not on side as I made my way over to Claire’s parents in Altrincham for the bridal preparation. It was very relaxed and it was again nice to see Livvy Morewood who was on make up duties. Once Claire’s father had seen Claire in the wedding dress I made my way to the Saddleworth Hotel to shoot Claire and Neal’s wedding photography in Oldham.

The Saddleworth Hotel

I really enjoy shooting weddings at The Saddleworth Hotel. Claire and Neal’s wedding came only a few weeks after my last visit for Hannah and Tom’s wedding back in May. The Saddleworth Hotel is a beautiful venue and a stunning venue for a wedding. With a stunning main hall, beautiful gardens and fantastic food, I cannot recommend it highly enough. On top of all that, the team at The Saddleworth Hotel are wedding experts and will run your day perfectly. With the rain stopping any plans for an outdoor ceremony, Neal was waiting patiently in the wedding service room inside the Saddleworth Hotel as Claire made her entrance. With both Claire and Neal fighting back the (happy) tears, it was a wonderfully emotional wedding service.

Sunset over Saddleworth

Once Claire and Neal said I do and sealed the deal with a kiss, it was into the main hall at The Saddleworth Hotel for the reception and wedding breakfast. Thankfully the weather cleared up during the meal and Claire and Neal could join me outside for some couple photos before the sunset over the Saddleworth hills. With a secret routine hidden in the first dance and a nod to Claire burlesque hen do, Claire and Neal’s Oldham wedding photography at The Saddleworth Hotel ended with a fantastic firework display.

So here’s Claire and Neal’s Oldham wedding photography. Music by BORNS, photos by me…

Etrop Grange Wedding Photography // Jen and Lewis

Etrop Grange Wedding Photography

Honest Emotion

Jen and Lewis booked me to shoot their Etrop Grange wedding photography back in August. The day started at Jens’ parents home in Altrincham for the pre-wedding preparation. Jen was very relaxed, laughing and joking with her friends and parents all whilst enjoying a quick drink of champagne. Once the hair and make up was complete and Jen was in her wedding dress it was time for the big reveal to Jen’s parents and both mum and dad were very emotional as they saw their daughter in her wedding dress. I always love this part of the wedding day with such honest emotion that always creates amazing photographs.

James Wray Wedding Cinematography

It was great to work alongside James Wray Wedding Cinematography at Jen and Lewis’ Etrop Grange wedding. James creates beautiful wedding films whilst being amazingly discreet during the wedding day. I highly recommend James to all my wedding couples, his work speaks for itself and as we share the same subtle style, it’s great to work alongside James and his team. It took a little negotiation from James and I to be allowed to shoot inside St Anne’s Church in Sale, but we were allowed to shoot the wedding, mainly thanks to our discreet style. Once Jen and Lewis were married and a handful of family formals shot outside the church, we left and made our way to the reception.

Etrop Grange Hotel

Jen and Lewis had their reception at The Etrop Grange Hotel. The Etrop Grange is a Georgian townhouse located close to Manchester airport. It was great to see light up letters from my wedding buddies The Word Is Love set up inside the Etrop Grange. With stunning summer sun, the guests enjoyed drinks outside The Etrop Grange before the wedding breakfast started. Once the speeches were complete, Jen and Lewis joined myself and James Wray for a quick walk in the nearby park whilst the sun set behind us to create some dramatic couple photos. We were pretty pleased with the images we created thanks to the amazing light!

So here’s Jen and Lewis’ Etrop Grange wedding photography. Photos by me, music by Phil Collins (Lewis’ favourite)…

A Wedding At Manchester Town Hall // Christine and Phil

wedding at manchester town hall

Wedding at Manchester Town Hall

Christine and Phil had their wedding at Manchester Town Hall which is one of my favourite wedding venues in the city. I have photographed a lot of weddings at Manchester Town Hall such as Sally and James’ wedding last November. Manchester Town Hall is spectacular and it really is one of the best venues in the city for a marriage service. Christine started the day close to Manchester Town Hall at another wonderful city centre venue, The Midland Hotel. As The Midland is so close to Manchester Town Hall, once the preparation was finished it was a short walk over to meet up with Phil. Phil was patiently (and nervously) waiting for Christine. All the nerves disappeared when Christine joined him at the top of the aisle for their marriage service.

Magician Sam Fitton

After a confetti photograph outside Manchester Town Hall, Christie and Phil led their guests back inside for their reception. Magician Sam Fitton was waiting to entertain the guests with his wit and incredible magic skills. I thoroughly enjoyed photographing Sam at work and he is a brilliant additional to a wedding. Sam Fitton is one of the leading magicians in the country and won the 2015 Wedding Industry Award for Best National Wedding Entertainer and when you see him at work, it is obvious why he won. Sam’s skills blow my mind and I’m that impressed he will be performing at my own 40th birthday next year! The highlight of the reception was Sam turning a piece of paper into a bottle of bubbly with a shower of sparks, a photo I had to get very close up to get. It’s a good thing I don’t have much hair left to burn!

Mark Lenik Films

Working alongside me was Mark Lenik from Lenik Wedding Films. Mark is one of the leading wedding cinematographers in the UK and his work is just sublime. Mark is also very discreet and quietly went about his work throughout the day. I cannot wait to see the film he has produced  and you really should check him out if you are considering a wedding film. Mark and I took Christine and Phil for a short walk into the streets of Manchester for their couple photos before heading back for the earliest first dance I have ever photographed at 5pm! Christine and Phil had a wonderful wedding and it was a pleasure to work alongside such talented wedding pro’s and I must say a huge thanks to Paul Moore who joined me to second shoot for the day. I’m looking forward to working with Paul again in 2017!
